Greek President to address House

PRESIDENT Carolos Papoulias of Greece will address the House of Representatives and tour the island’s main towns during his four-day official visit to the island starting on Sunday.

Papoulias, a former Foreign Minister, is scheduled to arrive at 11.30 am on Sunday at the head of a 20-member delegation that includes deputy Foreign Minister Ioannis Valinakis.

He will be met by President Papadopoulos and a 21-gun salute and there will be brief speeches by the two heads of state. Later in the day, Papadopoulos will present Papoulias with the Grand Cross of the Order of Archbishop Makarios III, Cyprus’ highest decoration.

In the afternoon, President Papoulias will visit the Eoka graves at the Central Prison and the Archbishopric, where he will attend mass and visit the private quarters of the late President Makarios.

On Monday morning, the Greek president will visit the Nicosia Town Hall, where Mayor Michael Zampelas will present him with the key of the city and then escort him on a visit to the buffer zone.

He will later visit the Pancyprian Gymnasium, National Guard headquarters and the Greek army contingent at Malounda, where he will have lunch at the Eldyk camp.

In the afternoon, Papoulias will meet Greek Cypriot political party leaders in his suite at the Hilton Hotel, while later he will drive to the House of Representatives in the company of President Papadopoulos.

He will address a special session of the House at 7pm

Later in the evening, Papoulias will be the official guest at a state dinner at the Presidential Palace.

Papoulias will spend Tuesday visiting Paphos, Kykko monastery and the tomb of Archbishop Makarios and will be the luncheon guest of Bishop Nikiforos.

In the evening, he will attend a reception at the residence of the Greek Ambassador in Nicosia.

On Wednesday, he will travel to Limassol, Paralimni, Dherinia, Cape Greco and Larnaca, before departing at 6pm.
